Malappuram is a municipality in the South Indian state of Kerala. It is the administrative headquarters of Malappuram district.Malappuram, in Malayalam, means 'On top of the hills'.Malappuram is situated 50 km southeast of Kozhikode and 90 km northwest of Palakkad on the Kozhikode (Calicut) - Chennai road (NH 213). It joins NH 47 inPalakkad. The temples and the mosques of this district are well-known for their bright festivals. The uprising is generally known asMappila Lahala. Anakkayam, 8 km from the city, was an important centre of 1921Malabar Rebellion. Ponnani is a coastal town and a municipality in Malappuram district in the Indian state of Kerala is famous for trade from ancient times. It is the smallest Taluk in Malappuram district. This small, pictorial town is bounded by the Arabian Sea on the west. It is the only port in Malappuram district and one of the oldest ones in Kerala. This tidal port, mainly used by the fishing industry, is at the mouth of Bharathapuza, the second longest river of Kerala. This place is an important fishing centre.Ponnani is also famous for the ancient Muslim mosque.Near Ponnani is Biyyam Kayal, the broad stretch of water where boat race is held during Onam. Ponnani-Purathur belt, where the river 'Bharathapuzha' and the river 'Tirur-Ponnai Puzha' join together to traverse into the Arabian sea, becomes charming with large series of migrating birds. If one crosses the ferry of Chamravattom in March-April-May period one cannot but miss the lovely chain of birds. Nearly 25 varieties of birds have been identified in this area.

Kottakkal is renowned "Centre for Ayurvedic treatment". Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala is one of the pioneer institutions of Ayurveda - the traditional system of health and medicine - in Kottakkal. Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala is situated at Eranaud Taluk, of Malappuram district. Kottakkal Aryavaidyashala is famous both in India and Abroad. Vaidyarathnam P.S.Variar (1869-1946) established this famed center for Ayurvedic treatment, in 1902. Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala attracts even foreigners with the style of treatment they follow.The medicinal herb garden nurtured by the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala forms the focus of attraction of hundreds of people.

Located 32 kms from Malappuram at Tirur is the hallowed Thunchan Parambu, the birthplace of Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam language. This stretch of ground has been carefully potted for posterity with items like the iron stylus used by the scholar and literary giant kept on display. The holy day of Vijayadasami witnesses children being brought here to be initiated into the world of education and knowledge The ancient kanjira tree (Nux vomica) under which he is supposed to have imparted knowledge to his beloved disciples and composed his poems is one of the treasured exhibits here. The memorial also houses granite Saraswathi Mandapam along with a library of rare manuscripts.

The written history of pookkottur, an agricultural village starts from 1900. Pookkottur which belonged to Nilamboor Kovilakam after Tippu’s invasion became a place of attention in 1921. The war between natives of pookkottur and its supporters with British Army made Pookkottur very famous. It became the first place in British India where people directly battled with British Raj.
During this period the landlord –tenant issue flared up and the spirit of independent movement spread among the people. The combined movement of Khilafat and Non co-operation led a number of people in to the path of independent struggle. This struggle against the British rule and the arrest of a large number of people made them more determined and spirited in fighting the traditional administration.

Kottakkunnu means "the mount with the fort". Kottakkunnu is one of the freshly developed tourist place in Malappuram District and also highest point. Kottakkunnu is situated at the heart of the Malappuram Tow located near the district collectorate in Malappuram, one can see traces of an old fort at the crest of the Cantonment Hill. The fort was the first to be built by the Zamorins of Kozhikode. Nearby are the Vettakkorumakan Temple and the Siva Temple with the famous murals of Malabar.
