Kozhikode, previously known as Calicut, is a pleasant ancient town, located in the northern part of Kerala. It was made famous by Vasco da Gama's arrival at the Kappad beach. The legendary traveller Marco Polo described in 1320 AD as the "Great Province of Malabar". After the 13th century, Kozhikode grew in importance as a port and the capital of the powerful kingdom of the Samoothiris meaning "Lords of the Sea" or the Zamorins, as the Portuguese called them. Some historians say that Kozhikode derives its name from the fortified palace 'Koyil Kotta' built by a Samoothiri ruler.

Much of this richness today lies buried in the glory of past Today, Kozhikode is an important trading centre for timber and tiles.

Lying 50kms east of Kozhikode, Thusharagiri is a small tribal tourist spot in Kerala. Tow streams originating from the Western Ghats meet here to form the River Challipuzha. The river diverges into three waterfalls, creating a snowy spray, which gives the name 'Thusharagiri' which means 'snowy peak'. A 5km trek upstream will take one to the stream's origin. Of the three waterfalls, the highest is the Thenpara that drops 75 metres below.
